Abstract:

The article analyses specific features of German national consciousness formed under the influence of Napoleonic wars. The author claims that they manifested themselves most vividly two generations later, during the Franco-Prussian War in the period of 1870 – 1871. Revanchist sentiments widely spread in the army and society contributed to the excessive tightening of conditions of the Frankfurt peace treaty in 1871 year.
